BEL 20 and Degroof Petercam: common celebration of anniversaries

By Degroof Petercam - Marketing & Communication Specialist
This year marks the 30 years anniversary of the creation of the BEL 20, the same year Degroof Petercam celebrates its 150 years. The story of Degroof Petercam which finds its origin in 1871 is closely linked to the Brussels Stock Exchange.
The late Baron Jean Peterbroeck a founding partner of Petercam and a former Chairman of the Brussels Stock Exchange, was at the origin of the launch of the flagship index of the Brussels Stock Exchange. In 1989 already, Jean Peterbroeck had been at the vanguard of the implementation of the computer assisted trading system (CATS) adopted by the stock exchange which continuously listed equity prices. Today, Degroof Petercam continues to play an important role in the Belgian financial ecosystem via its dealing desks and its own trading room but also thanks to a unique integrated model combining four businesses: Private Banking, Institutional Asset Management, Investment Banking and Asset Services.
As we celebrate our jubilee it is also a time to look back with pride to our history, to our successes and to honor those who came before us.
Bruno Colmant, CEO Degroof Petercam
Bruno Colmant, CEO Degroof Petercam and former President of Euronext Brussels from 2007 to 2009: “As we celebrate our jubilee it is also a time to look back with pride to our history, to our successes and to honor those who came before us. Marking the BEL 20 anniversary is also a testimonial on the entrepreneurial spirit that drives us and to the role we occupy in the Belgian economic landscape as an important player in the financial market. Following Jean Peterbroeck’s legacy we continue to be a trusted and responsible partner to our clients by turning innovative ideas into concrete actions and show our clients what is coming next. Our company has created unique moments to help our economy and society forward, and we will continue to do so.”

Since its launch in March 1991, the BEL 20 has played its part in measuring the Brussels stock market, charting the highs and lows of three decades of economic development and tracking the performance of the 20 most representative companies for the Belgian market. The BEL 20 rapidly became one of Euronext’ strongest brands and one of the most widely recognized symbol of the Belgian economy.
